Sheet 4: Notes
Questions and issues raised along the way:
-How many tagged trees before bringing Dick and Tom's crew for cut and paint? (Tom says – all)
-How to arrange for removal of largest trees outside plan area? (Tom will deal. I'll report approximate location, some tagging)
-Should plan area be expanded - where are the most crowded adjacent areas?
-How to get double-check by experts on my ID? (Tom said OK – will get another skilled volunteer to double check)
-Should probably make a tally sheet for field use.
Learnings:
-A good sequence for a sector is as follows:
One pass to tag all maples larger than kneee height - yellow for Norway, Blue for other. Keep count while tagging, and record at end of pass.
Next pass to pull all smaller untagged Norway Maples, especially near yellow tag trees. Keep count while pulling, and record at end of pass.
Next pass - bring weed wrench & pull by hand or weed wrench all yellow-tagged trees that can be removed. Keep count while pulling, and record at end of pass. Keep 4 counts: 1) untagged norway maples pulled, if any new ones are found 2) pulled norways 3) weed wrenched norways, less than 1", 4) wrenched norways >1" [bigger than 2" I haven't been able to wrench]
Then counts can be added & subtracted to fill out the table.
There are a lot of larger Norway Maples uphill East of the plan area.
There are some smaller Norway Maples South
If I get a lot of HS volunteers, I could expand the plan area
6th grade count went well – only one sector looks out of whack
